Fat Reduction
Non-surgical body contouring covers three different problems that are often confused: reducing fat, toning muscle, and tightening skin. No single treatment does all three. This page explains which is which, so you book the one that addresses what actually bothers you. All are performed without surgery or general anesthesia, and none requires downtime.
Which treatment do I need?
Start by identifying what you are trying to change. This is the step most people skip, and it is the reason non-surgical body treatments sometimes disappoint.
| What bothers you | Treatment | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| A pinchable pocket of fat that resists diet and exercise | CoolSculpting | Freezes and permanently destroys fat cells (cryolipolysis) |
| Fullness under the chin | Kybella | Injectable deoxycholic acid that dissolves submental fat |
| Lack of muscle tone or definition, not fat | CoolTone | Magnetic muscle stimulation to strengthen and firm |
| Loose or crepey skin over the area | Thermage for Body | Radiofrequency skin tightening |
| Cellulite dimpling | Avéli | Releases the fibrous septa that cause dimpling |
| Loose skin and separated muscle after pregnancy or weight loss | Tummy tuck or liposuction | Surgical — non-surgical options will not achieve this |
Fat reduction is not weight loss
This is the single most important thing to understand before booking. CoolSculpting and Kybella reduce a localised deposit of fat. They are not weight loss treatments, and they will not change the number on the scale meaningfully.
The right candidate is someone near their goal weight with a specific area that has not responded to diet and exercise. Someone hoping to lose a significant amount of weight will be disappointed, and we will say so at consultation rather than after.
What about GLP-1 medications?
Patients on semaglutide or tirzepatide often lose fat faster than their skin can retract, and the result is laxity rather than a remaining fat deposit. If that describes you, skin tightening or surgery is the appropriate next step, not further fat reduction. We are seeing this frequently and it changes the recommendation.
Who is a good candidate?
- At or near a stable goal weight
- A discrete, pinchable area rather than generalised fullness
- Reasonable skin quality — skin needs to retract after fat is removed
- Realistic expectations about the degree of change from a single treatment
Who is not a good candidate?
- Anyone seeking weight loss. These are contouring treatments, not weight management.
- Significant skin laxity. Removing fat beneath loose skin usually makes the laxity more obvious, not less.
- Visceral fat. Firm abdominal fullness that cannot be pinched sits beneath the muscle and cannot be treated by any external device.
- Muscle separation after pregnancy. Diastasis recti requires surgical repair.
How many treatments will I need?
It varies by treatment and by area. CoolSculpting often requires more than one cycle per area, Kybella typically two to four sessions, and CoolTone is a course of sessions rather than a single visit. Results from fat reduction develop over one to three months as the body clears the treated cells. Each treatment page sets out its own protocol and fees.

Frequently asked questions
Is the fat gone permanently?
With CoolSculpting and Kybella the treated fat cells are destroyed and do not return. Remaining fat cells can still enlarge with weight gain, so the result depends on maintaining a stable weight.
Will I need surgery instead?
Sometimes, and we will tell you plainly. Liposuction removes substantially more fat in one session, and a tummy tuck addresses loose skin and muscle separation that no non-surgical device can.
Is there downtime?
Generally none. Temporary numbness, swelling or tenderness in the treated area is common and settles within days to a few weeks.
Does non-surgical fat reduction tighten skin?
Not meaningfully. If loose skin is part of what bothers you, it needs to be addressed separately with skin tightening or surgery.
Can I combine treatments?
Yes, and it is often the right approach — for example reducing fat and then tightening the skin over it, or combining fat reduction with muscle toning.
Which is better, CoolSculpting or liposuction?
They serve different patients. CoolSculpting suits a small, discrete pocket in someone who wants no downtime. Liposuction removes considerably more, treats multiple areas in one operation, and gives a more predictable contour, but it is surgery.
Next steps
The most useful outcome of a consultation is an honest answer about whether fat, muscle, skin or surgery is the real issue — and whether a non-surgical treatment will get you where you want to go.
