Juvederm

The Juvederm family of injectable facial fillers are instant volumizers based on hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occuring gel and have been in use since 2006.  Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide (a natural sugar) that is found largely in the skin. Its primary function is to provide volume and pliability to the skin.  As we grow older, our skin loses volume and begins to develop changes recognizable as volume loss, wrinkles and folds. Some of the main components of healthy skin are water, fat, collagen, and hyaluronic acid. There are a number of injectable cosmetic fillers available to help improve upon one's facial appearance and achieve a more youthful look without plastic surgery. These fillers restore the lost volume and smooth out skin wrinkles.  There are a number of other hyaluronic acid injectable fillers similar to Juvederm available in the market. These include Restylane-L, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, Restylane Defyne, and Restylane Refyne.  Juvederm products all contain hyaluronic acid gel but there are a number of significant differences in the types of Juvederm products available today.

Problems that can be improved by volume enhancement of the aging face using Juvederm injections include:

  • Sunken cheeks (midface volume loss)
  • Sunken temples
  • Frown lines between eyebrows
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Droopy corners of the mouth
  • Lip lines
  • Thinning lips
  • Sunken acne scars
  • Jawline

Types of Juvederm products available

Naficy Rejuvenation Center offer the following types of Juvederm HA products.  The XC in the Juvederm products stands for 'eXtra Comfort' as these products all have Lidocaine (a numbing medication) mixed with them.

  • Juvederm Ultra XC
  • Juvederm Ultra Plus XC
  • Juvederm Voluma XC
  • Juvederm Vollure XC
  • Juvederm Volbella XC
  • Juvederm Volux
  • SkinVive

Since each type of filler has its unique advantages, the best possible results are often obtained by combining several different fillers types during one treatment.

Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC

Both Juvederm Ultra XC (Ultra) and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC (Ultra Plus) are similar in how well they spread out into injected areas.  The main difference between Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is the size of the particles, with Juvederm Ultra Plus having a larger particle size, and thus a longer duration of action. The degree of cross-linking of the HA is the differentiating factor between Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus, at 6 % and 8 %. respectively.

The softness of the Juvederm family of products generally makes them excellent choices for treating nasolabial folds and the corners of the mouth. Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC also tend to absorb more water when injected, and injections can swell more than some of the other products in general. For this reason, Juvederm products are generally not the best choice for treating the area around the eyes.

Juvederm Ultra XC is a popular filler for lip augmentation and for injections around the mouth area for mild to moderate wrinkles and deep folds and mild volume enhancement.

Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is a better option for moderate to severe wrinkles and deep folds and more volume enhancement.  Because of great cross-linking Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is composed of bigger molecules than Juvederm Ultra XC and thus it tends to be thicker and also last a little bit longer.

Juvederm Voluma XC

As we age our face loses fat and our cheeks flatten, making the skin begin to sag. This is caused by a natural loss of volume in the cheek area, or what the experts call age-related midface volume loss. Juvderm Voluma XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area

The main difference between Juvderm Voluma XC (Voluma) and Juvederm Ultra XC or Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is the Vycross method of cross-linking of the hyaluronic acid which makes Voluma more viscous and makes it lasts longer. Voluma is the only FDA-approved Juvederm filler indicated to replace volume in the midface (the upper cheek region). Voluma adds volume to the cheek area, for natural-looking results.  In a clinical study, people perceived themselves to look 5 years younger 6 months after treatment, and 3 years younger 24 months after treatment. The average volume injected during the clinical study was 6.8 syringes of Voluma to achieve optimal correction for the cheek area.

Juvederm Volux XC

Juvederm Volux was released in 2023 and is the newest filler in the Juvederm family of fillers.  Juvederm Volux XC is the strongest of all the Vycross HA fillers. Volux XC is FDA approved for augmenting the jawline and appears to last at least 12 months, but possibly up to 2 years.

Juvederm Vollure XC

Juvederm Vollure XC is the latest in the Juvederm family of fillers.  Juvederm Vollure XC is less hydrophilic than Ultra and Ultra Plus and so there is less swelling after injection. Vollure is based on Vycross technology so it is designed to last longer, with an indication of up to 18 months for the nasolabial folds.

Juvederm Volbella XC

Juvederm Volbella XC is one of the newer hyaluronic acid dermal fillers approved in 2016.  Volbella is inteneded to help smooth and give a natural improvement in the fullness and contour of the lips. The soft and smooth consistency of Volbella makes it the ideal filler for lip lines, and lip augmentation.

SkinVive

SkinVive by Juvederm helps the skin retain its natural moisture and softness leading to an improvement in the skin. In clinical studies, patients who were treated with SkinVive by Juvederm also reported high satisfaction with how glowing, hydrated, refreshed and healthy their skin looked.

Juvederm Results

Juvederm injections are performed every day of the week at the Naficy Center by our highly trained staff of injectors. Results for most are immediate although the treated area will continue to improve in appearance for a few days after treatment. As with all injections there is a small risk of bruising, which may be, minimized by avoiding medication that thin the blood.

What does Vycross mean?

Juvederm Vycross technology uses a unique combination of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HMWHA) and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (LMWHA). This allows delivery of a range of products which preserve high cohesivity associated with high molecular weight HA but simultaneously allow for it to be re-shaped more easily, a characteristic associated with LMWHA. This unique Vycross combination specifically refers to 90% of the content being LMWHA as opposed to traditional fillers being 100% HMWHA. This allows the product to be more easily molded to create facial contours and to integrate into the skin more naturally. By contrast those products with 100% HMWHA are much are harder to mold.
