IV Sedation vs. General Anesthesia in Cosmetic Surgery: What’s the Difference?

When preparing for a cosmetic surgery, one of the most important decisions you’ll make with your surgeon is what type of anesthesia will be used. Two common options are IV sedation and general anesthesia. While both are safe and effective, they differ in depth of sedation, recovery, and overall patient experience.

IV Sedation (also known as “twilight sedation”):

  • Administered through an IV line.

  • Patients remain in a deeply relaxed, semi-conscious state. Many drift off to sleep, but they can still be aroused.

  • Ideal for shorter, less invasive procedures (such as eyelid surgery, liposuction of small areas, or other shorter facial procedures).

  • Benefits include quicker recovery times, fewer side effects like nausea, and a lighter overall anesthetic experience.

General Anesthesia:

  • Administered through a mask or IV, with airway support provided (such as a breathing tube).

  • Patients are completely unconscious and unaware throughout the procedure.

  • Best suited for longer or more complex surgeries like abdominoplasty, facelifts, or combined procedures.

  • Patients could still be breathing on their own, especially if local anesthesia (numbing medication) is used to reduce the sensation of pain during surgery.

  • Recovery is longer, with possible grogginess or nausea in the hours following surgery.

Which is right for you?

The choice depends on your procedure, medical history, and comfort level. Your surgeon and anesthesia team will review the safest and most effective option tailored to your needs.
