Fotofacial

Fotofacial uses IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy to reduce the appearance of facial flushing, rosacea, redness, broken capillaries, spider veins, age/liver spots, freckles, minor sun damage, fine lines and pores. Based on what is being targeted, your provider will select the proper wavelength and energy levels. The treatment can be focused on a specific area or the entire face (and sometimes neck and chest) can be treated.  When an entire area is treated the treatment is often called Fotofacial, Photofacial, or Photorejuvenation.

With so many clinics offering Fotofacial, how do I choose the right place for my treatment?

Lasers are medical devices which require training and knowledge - and above all, constant medical supervision - for safe and effective operation. Discount laser clinics might offer lower fees and faster treatment times, but they will not be able to offer you the same level of medical expertise offered by a reputable medical office - especially that of a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon.  Our clinic uses the gold standard Lumenis M22 platform.

How does Fotofacial help Rosacea?

Fotofacial (Photofacial) uses intense pulsed light (IPL) energy to minimize redness and vascularity of the targeted area. Over a series of usually 3-5 treatments the skin will have a more normal (less flushed) color and better texture. In addition to minimizing rosacea, Fotofacials also help reduce acne because the energy of the IPL kills many of the bacteria that cause acne.  Yet another benefit of a Fotofacial is that it can increase collagen production to give your skin a more youthful appearance

How does Fotofacial help Acne?

Just as with Rosacea, Fotofacial (Photofacial) uses intense pulsed light (IPL) energy to reduce redness and inflammation of the targeted area and the laser light and heat kill many of the bacteria that cause acne.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed depend on the condition being treated. Most patients will see significant improvement following multiple treatments performed in 3-4 week intervals. We offer special package rates for the purchase of a series of five treatments.  For some conditions a maintenance treatment performed once or twice a year will help maintain the longevity of the results.

Am I a good candidate for Fotofacial?

New technology is making Fotofacial treatments effective for most skin types. Our trained staff will assess your skin and conditions in need of treatment to determine whether you are a good candidate for Fotofacial.  You may submit a photo of yourself if you want us to give you a quick opinion about whether we can help you using the link ask the doctor.

Are Fotofacial treatments painful?

You will feel some heat and discomfort, which can be minimized by using a topical anesthetic (numbing cream) or by using a cooling mechanism such as the Zimmer.

What will happen after the treatment?

You may experience temporary redness, itching and/or swelling in the treated area, but this typically lasts a very short time and most people return to work or normal activity immediately after treatment.  When vascular problems are treated it is possible to have bruising.

Should I be doing anything in preparation for my treatment?

You should avoid sun exposure and tanning (including artificial tanning products and procedures) before and after your treatments. Also, to reduce the chance of bruising, you should discontinue the use of any blood thinners such as Coumadin, aspirin or other types of anti-platelet or anti-coagulant herbal remedies including Garlic, Ginger, Cayenne, Gingko, Gingko biloba, Selenium, Papaya, Bilberry and Vitamin E Tablets/Supplements.
