How does laser hair removal work?

Laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) hair removal destroys the entire hair follicle, down to the bulb and its germinating centers, gently removing unwanted hair. Light energy causes thermal (heat) injury to the hair follicle, while preserving the surrounding healthy skin. The light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) found in the hair shaft. This energy absorbed in the shaft causes the temperature to reach a sufficiently high level in the hair follicle so that the targeted hair structures are destroyed and re-growth is inhibited.

The key to effective laser hair removal treatments is in finding the optimal wavelength in which absorption of the pigment in the hair follicle (melanin) is maximized, and absorption by the pigment of the skin (or blood vessels) is minimized. (The opposite is true for treatment of vascular lesions). Certain wavelengths of light capture and maximize this absorption differential - which results in effective hair removal.

Identifying the correct wavelength to use on your hair and skin is critical to your outcome. Therefore, it is essential that your provider not only be extremely knowledgeable in laser technology, but that a Physician well-trained in laser physics be present to assess the efficacy of your treatment. Most laser clinics cannot offer this to you, but Dr. Naficy's Plastic Surgery & Rejuvenation Center can.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments depends on your skin and hair type. Many patients will see a significant reduction in hair growth after just one treatment. However, as a general rule, multiple treatments are necessary in order to maximize results. We offer special package rates for the purchase of a series of six treatments.

Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?

New technology is making laser hair removal effective for most skin and hair types. Dr. Naficy and his trained staff will personally assess your skin and hair type to determine whether you are a good candidate for laser hair removal.

Is laser hair removal painful?

You will feel a mild amount of discomfort, often described as a rubber band snapping on your skin. You will also feel a heating sensation as the laser penetrates the hair follicle, destroying the root. We combine our laser treatment with the use of the Zimmer, which provides the most effective method of minimizing discomfort using effective skin cooling techniques. We generally advise against using topical numbing cream, as the cooling mechanism can sufficiently reduce discomfort for most patients.

What will happen after the treatment?

You may experience temporary redness and itching in the treated area, but this typically lasts a very short time and most people return to work or normal activity immediately after treatment. Up to three weeks after the treatment, you will notice a shedding of the hair growth, although this will generally not be indicative of permanent hair loss.

Should I be doing anything in preparation for my treatment?

You should avoid sun exposure and tanning (including artificial tanning products and procedures) before and after your treatments.
